BACKGROUNDRefractive eye surgery (correcting or reducing one's need for glasses or contact lenses), has been in development for several decades. Years ago, this consisted of the radial keratotomy (RK) procedure, which was popularized in Russia. This technique involves incisions in the cornea with the use of a diamond blade in order to achieve the desired refractive result. Since 1996, refractive surgery has been largely dominated by the use of excimer laser. It was in that year, that the FDA approved the use of the excimer laser. Initially, laser vision correction was limited to myopia or nearsightedness. However, the correction of astigmatism as well as hyperopia or farsightedness has also become available with Laser Vision Correction or LASIK. Dr. Zimm completed a fellowship (specialty training) in corneal and refractive surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital under the direction of Dr. Richard Troutman, a world renowned expert in corneal and refractive surgery. Dr. Zimm has been performing refractive surgery since 1991 and is one of the most experienced refractive surgeons in southwest Florida. WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LASIK (LASER VISION CORRECTION)? Generally, people unhappy with their need for glasses and contact lenses may be a candidate for laser vision correction. Most people who choose Lasik are interested in an improved lifestyle without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses. However, we recommend that you come in for a free evaluation with Dr. Zimm. After a consultation with Dr. Zimm, he will determine whether LASIK is a procedure that could benefit you. DR. ZIMM'S TESTIMONIAL For several years, I have been performing laser vision correction and the vision that my patients have achieved has been spectacular. I was so impressed by the vision my Lasik patients had that I decided to have the procedure performed myself! That's right, I had Lasik. My relative is an ophthalmologist in Los Angeles and I had both eyes lasered. I cannot tell you how wonderful life is without the bother of glasses or contact lenses. For 20 years, I had the hassle of glasses and contacts, not anymore; now I am enjoying an improved lifestyle through Lasik. I was a successful contact lens and glass wearer. I had no problems with my glasses or my contact lenses. However, I felt that there was a better option available to me, namely, Lasik. Now, my lifestyle is better, I have 20/15 vision in my right eye and 20/20 vision in my left eye and I no longer have the twice a day ritual of taking my contact lenses in and out. Truly, Lasik has been a wonderful improvement in my lifestyle. I can certainly tell you from personal experience, if you decide to have Lasik, your life will never be the same! LASIK This procedure involves the use of the VISX IV Laser to remove the outer layer of the cornea, reshaping the eye to improve the vision. The corneal flap is created under which the laser light is directed. The flap is then placed over the ablated cornea, generally allowing rapid improvement in your uncorrected vision. The procedure is easy for the patient and there is little, if any discomfort. Approximately 1,000 Americans a day are having Lasik performed and it is an FDA approved procedure. PRK Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is another method of laser vision correction. In this technique, the exact same laser is used as in LASIK. The main difference is that in PRK, no flap is created and patients still have excellent results. In your consultation with Dr. Zimm, he will determine and explain which technique is best for you. ABOUT OUR LASER CENTER All Saints Eye Center is proud to offer patients one of the most advanced laser systems available - the Visx Star IV Laser. This is the same type of laser that Dr. Salz (Dr. Zimm's relative in Los Angeles) used to treat Dr. Zimm's eyes. Dr. Zimm wanted the best laser for his own eyes and for YOUR eyes, so he selected the Visx Star IV Laser. This state-of-the-art laser has an eye tracking system (which follows the eye throughout the laser procedure), increased ablation zone and blend zones. All of these upgrades are designed to give our patients improved vision in less time. The Visx Star IV Laser is on site in both Naples and Fort Myers, giving you, our patient, maximum flexibility in scheduling your procedure. In addition, both of our Lasers are equipped with Fourier Software, considered by many experts to be the most advanced technology available. The day of your laser surgery, you will be at our facility approximately 45 minutes, but in our laser room less than 15 minutes. Afterwards, you will leave wearing only sunglasses. We do require that a friend accompany you after your Lasik procedure. CustomVue Procedure Provides Individualized Laser Vision Correction. Laser vision correction can now be tailored to the unique characteristics of your eyes thanks to advanced technology developed by VISX, Incorporated, the worldwide leader in laser vision correction, and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "Like a fingerprint, the vision of every eye is unique," says Jeffrey Zimm, M.D. "The VISX CustomVue procedure uses state-of-the-art technology to measure the unique characteristics of your eyes. Based on a sophisticated map of the eye, we can customize a unique correction that is tailor-made to your vision." By specifically addressing the unique imperfections of your vision, the VISX CustomVue procedure can help you achieve your "personal best vision," without contact lenses or glasses. Resu1ts from a clinical study have confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the CustomVue procedure, and demonstrated that it can potentially produce better vision than previously possible with contact lenses or glasses. At the heart of the CustomVue procedure is the VISX WaveScan® can system. The Waves can is 25 times more precise measuring visual imperfections than the technology commonly used to prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. "The WaveScan system produces a detailed map of the eye. The digital information is transferred to the STAR S4 Excimer Laser System," explains Dr. Zimm. "This provides a new level of precision and accuracy for optimizing each patient's vision based on their specific needs." Optimizing "Your Personal Best Vision" Using the measurements and correction technologies of the Custom Vue procedure, All Saints Eye Center can develop an individualized laser vision correction plan that addresses your individual needs. The VISX CustomVue procedure utilizes the WaveScan® measurement device to map the entire optical path of your eye. The resulting WavePrint® map produces a "fingerprint of your vision," providing your doctor with a precise and detailed guide for how to best improve your vision. "This enables us to correct your eyesight so that you get the best possible vision," says Dr, Zimm. "In many cases, patients see better than 20/20 following a CustomVue treatment" CustomVue: An FDA-Approved Procedure The safety and effectiveness of the CustomVue procedure is underscored by the results of a clinical study conducted by VISX, Incorporated for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to results from the FDA study, at one year after the procedure, 100 percent of the people whose vision was corrected with the CustomVue procedure could pass driving test without glasses or contact lenses. Ninety-eight percent of the people treated with CustomVue had 20/20 or better vision at one year after the procedure, and 70 percent of those people could actually see better than 20/20 -without glasses or contact lenses. AFTER LASER VISION CORRECTION In the majority of cases, you will have very little pain and fairly rapid improvement in visual acuity. As a general rule, visual recoveries are rapid after the Lasik procedure. Some patients report some tearing and slight irritation for approximately one to six hours after their laser, but the majority of patients are resuming their normal activities such as driving, the same day as the laser procedure. For instance, Dr. Zimm was able to drive on Los Angeles freeways, several hours after he had the Lasik procedure performed. This is not always the case, but his experience is not uncommon. For some patients, it does take longer for their vision to improve, but overall, patients are resuming their normal daily activities the following day. For one week after the procedure, topical eye drops will be used in order to aid in the healing of the eye. Patients are currently seen one day, one week and one month after the procedure. Your last postoperative visit is, usually, one year after the day of your laser. ![]()
