Eye Exams Naples, Bonita Springs, & Fort Myers

At All Saints Eye Center, we stress the importance of regular eye exams and routine eye check-ups. Regular eye examinations keep us healthy by allowing doctors to diagnose and treat eye conditions as early as possible. Certain conditions, such as glaucoma, often show no symptoms until irreversible damage has been done. The most important thing you can do for your vision is to schedule routine eye exams with your ophthalmologist!

All Saints Eye Center would like to invite you to call us if you are due for an eye exam, or have any concerns regarding your vision. If you have any sudden vision changes, such as blurry vision, double vision, sudden flashes of light or floaters, make sure to see your Fort Myers/ Naples ophthalmologist as soon as you can! These symptoms could be harmless, but could also be signs of a more serious condition.

What to Expect During a Comprehensive Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam is an in-depth assessment of your eye health. It involves a series of tests that will check your eyes for refractive errors (e.g., nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism) as well as eye diseases (e.g., glaucoma, cataracts).

First, your eye doctor will ask you questions about the following:

  • Your general and visual health
  • Your family’s medical history
  • Any medications you take
  • Corrective lenses you wear (if applicable)

Next, your eye doctor will conduct a series of tests. The first test, which most people are familiar with, involves viewing an eye chart to determine how well you see at various distances. If your doctor determines that you do not have 20/20 vision, he or she will ask you to view the eye chart through a device called a phoroptor, which contains different lenses. The phoroptor helps determine the best eyewear prescription for you.

Your doctor will conduct other tests to assess your pupils, side vision, eye movement and eye pressure. He or she may also perform a slit-lamp exam and pupil dilation to examine the internal structures of the eyes, including the optic nerve and retina.

Comprehensive eye exams are simple and comfortable. They can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to complete, depending on the type and number of tests being administered.

Once your comprehensive exam is complete, you will be free to return home. If your pupils have been dilated, you may need to have a loved one drive you home as the effects of the dilating eye drops may last for several hours.

Who Should Get a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

Everyone should get a comprehensive eye exam! How often you should have one and which tests should be included in your exam depend on several factors, including your age, eye health, overall health and family history of eye diseases. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that healthy individuals have eye exams at the following ages:

  • At 6 months of age for infants
  • At age 3 and then again 5 or 6 for young children
  • Every two years for grade-school children and teenagers
  • Every two years for adults ages 18 to 60
  • Once a year or as recommended for children and adults who wear prescription eyewear

They also fitted me for the right glasses to wear driving vs. out on the boat and golf course. Major improvement in quality of living!!!”

“Just had LASIK here. The first appointment took a while, but that's because they did a lot of testing. Theyhad me scheduled the next week and they did the surgery within about 1 hour. Dr. Zimm was very nice, chill, and laid-back, which put me at eas. I couldn't get one of my eyes to cooperate, but he stuck with itand helped coach me through not moving it during the surgery.”
